YPARD Malawi

YPARD is one of the emerging and promising powerful networks in bringing knowledge on opportunities for youths in Agriculture in Malawi. The Malawi Chapter, is Coordinated at the NEPAD Fish Node, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). Currently, the chapter utilizes social media to share opportunities and lessons as a least cost and most utilized platform by youths.

YPARD objectives in connecting youths for sharing of lesson and opportunities remain vital for increased youth interest in agriculture in a country like Malawi. The country’s economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, supporting about 85% of the population for employment, account for over 35% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 90% of foreign exchange earnings (MEP, 2010). Fisheries is also another sector of great social and economic importance, contributing about 4% to the GDP and 60% of the animal protein requirement (GoM, 2007). The sector is also a major source of income and employment. Most of the fishing activities take place in Lake Malawi, the world’s ninth largest freshwater lake and has the highest fish diversity of over 1000 species (A UNESCO World Heritage for freshwater diversity).

The age structure of Malawi’s population is youthful with two-thirds of the population of about 17 million being under the age of 25.  Ironically, most youths are unemployed despite the country’s long history and dependence on agriculture. The current enrollment in agriculture training institutions is as low as 4.1% (WBWP No. 182).

Hence, it is key to ensure that youth interest in agriculture is enhanced and nurtured at an early stage. Partnerships and joint efforts remain vital for activists and promoters for youth engagement in agriculture to provide an enabling environment including access to land and capital.

The chapter is ready to link with other youth programs.  If you have any question and ideas for advancing youth interest, engagement and opportunities contact us.
