Post-doctoral position in ecosystem genetics - Umea, Sweden

Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies

Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental studies are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to study ecosystem genetics of boreal trees. The department has about 65 employees, involved in administration, education and research focused on management of wildlife and fish population and biodiversity and conservation in forested ecosystems.

At the department the candidate will work within the forest biocore group which is a group of researches (including senior researchers, post docs and PhD students) focusing on issues related to biodiversity, conservation and restoration of forest ecosystems.The specific project is an international collaboration and the candidate will cooperate with researchers from other departments at SLU (Associate Professor Michael Gundale, Department of Forest, Ecology and Management) as well as international partners, Professor Glenn Iason (The James Hutton Institute, Scotland) and Regents’ Professor Thomas Whitham (Northern Arizona University, USA).


SLU is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to investigate the influence of genetic variation of boreal trees on soil ecosystems. More specifically, the holder of this position will study how different full-sib families of Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees via differences in litter chemistry etc. influence soil characteristics and interactions with forest floor vegetation, ectomycorrhizal communities and impact the establishment of understorey seedlings. The candidate is expected to design experiments, conduct work in the field and lab, and publish results in peer-review journals. The field-work will be undertaken within a 30 year old common garden experiment in Sävar, just outside of Umeå, containing 4500 Norway spruce trees from more than 100 different mother-father crossings.


 The applicant should be well acquainted with the community and ecosystem genetic framework, preferably have a background in soil science including practical experience in analytic methods of relevance to soil ecosystems. Experience from work related to seedling performance, ectomycorrhizal associations and quantitative genetics is preferable.


As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers,SLU is primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree in ecology/biology/soil science or similar that is three years old at most.
